ICHR Workshop on Mental Health in Vietnamese communities: Evidence from research with children, youth, adults of working age and elderly people

Mental Health in Vietnamese communities

Evidence from research with children, youth, adults of working age and elderly people.

Institute for Community Health Research (ICHR)

Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Hue, January 9-10, 2015

Recent studies in Viet Nam show that most people are happy and content most of the time. However, many people of all ages experience mild, moderate or severe mental disorder. Depression, anxiety, family relationship problems, substance abuse and self-harm are among the most common forms of psychological distress. The causes are complex. During the different stages of life, many factors can interfere with our well-being. Our genetic inheritance, physical illness, families, schools, work, social pressures and the environment all contribute.

Despite the strong focus recently on mental health by the Government, NGOs, the mass media and social media, there has been relatively little scientific research into the psychological well-being of the population of Viet Nam. In this workshop, researchers from the Hue Institute for Community Health Research (ICHR) and colleagues from education and health services will present the main findings of their research into the mental health of people at different stages of life. The studies have been done nationally and in the central region. The main purpose of this workshop is to discuss the practical implications for families, schools, universities, health services and social organisations.

The Hue Institute for Community Health Research is dedicated to building stronger connections between communities and universities. In this program, we will learn directly from people in the community: adolescents, young adults, new mothers, adults living with serious illness and elderly people. Participants will also include clinicians and other professionals in health and education services, policy makers and academics. We will discuss the ways in which the research findings can be applied to make a positive, practical difference in people’s lives. The workshop also includes international perspectives on mental health, based on research and advocacy in the East Asian region and Australia.

Sponsors: Our research and this workshop are supported financially by The Atlantic Philanthropies Vietnam; The Viet Nam Government postgraduate scholarship program, the Australian Government Australia Awards Scholarships and Endeavour Awards programs; the Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy; and the Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation at Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Brisbane, Australia.
