Small grant projects for community health research in the Central and Highlands regions of Vietnam are about to be implemented in 2014.

The Institute for Community Health Research (ICHR) has awarded small grants to 12 proposals to undertake research projects across five provinces in the Central and Highlands regions. The successful projects were selected from among 24 applications by medical staff from the five provinces, as well as the teaching staff of both clinical and public health faculties of Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy. With the financial and technical support of the ICHR, the researchers will aim to provide scientific evidence to assist planning at the local level, while also enhancing the scientific research skills of their staff.

These goals reflect the main activities of the Institute, which works directly in cooperation with the Health Departments of Hue, Da Nang, Binh Dinh, Khanh Hoa and Dak Lak, conducting research activities in community health and strengthening the capacity of local officials.  On the 16th and 20th of June 2014, in Hue and Binh Dinh respectively, the Institute organized meetings with the applicants responsible for the 12 successful small grant research projects, in order for them to defend their proposals. These proposals were selected by the ICHR’s Scientific Council, which included professors from the Queensland University of Technology (Australia), Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy, and the leaders of the Provincial Health Deparment at the local level.

After listening to the researchers present their proposals, the Scientific Council provided feedback to make the proposals more practical, feasible and able to produce scientific evidence for intervention planning at the local level. The Institute will grant approximately 60 to 100 million VND for each study, with additional funding also provided by the local partners. In addition, the Institute will provide technical and methodological support for each project for the duration of the research process. The studies will be conducted from July to December 2014.
