Project on Strengthening first aid and snakebites treatment in Thua Thien Hué province

The Institute of Community Health Research (ICHR) in cooperation with Bernhard Nocht Institute of Tropical Medicine, Hamburg, Germany implement a project on epidemiology and management of snakebites in Thua Thien Hué (TT Hué) province from 2016 - 2018.

Snakebites are a neglected health condition with an estimated 100,000 deaths worldwide each year and approximately 400,000 victims suffer permanent disabilities. Epidemiological data on number of snakebites are largely missing and up to date no data are available from Vietnam. Anti-venom the essential drug in management of venomous snakebites is not available in central and district hospitals in TT Hué province.

Short description of 5 snakes in our brochure

The objective of the present project is to obtain data on number of snakebites in TT Hué province and improve health care for snakebite patients in the province.

The project team with Professor Vo Van Thang, Dr. Nguyen Hoang Lan, Dr. Nguyen Phuc Thanh Nhan, Dr. Bui Thi Phuong Anh, Ms. Tran Thi Tao, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy and Dr. Jörg Blessmann will implement a community study on epidemiology of snakebites in TT Hué province, to obtain reliable data about frequency of snakebites in three different regions in the province, the mountainous, coastal and urban/suburban region. A KAP survey will obtain qualitative data on knowledge, attitude and practise of medical staff and community members about snake fauna, first aid and treatment for snakebite victims.

A second part of the project focuses on management of snakebites at Hué University Hospital. Antivenom for treatment of venomous snakebites will be purchased from the Institute of Vaccine and Medical Biologicals (IVAC), Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa, Vietnam and Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute (QSMI) in Bangkok, Thailand.

A workshop about management of snakebites for medical staff from ICU, emergency room and surgical department and continuous bedside teaching will improve knowledge and practical skills.
