The Launch of the "Evidence for Better Lives" StudyAround one billion children worldwide experience interpersonal violence, corporal punishment, cruelty, or sexual abuse each year. Violence of different forms disrupts children's emotional development, contributes to lasting behavioural problems, and has lifelong effects on well-being and productivity and most researches has been based on cross-sectional surveys.
The “Evidence for Better Lives Study” (EBLS) is an innovative global birth-cohort study in eight cities across the world- including Kingston, Jamaica; Koforidua, Ghana; Stellenbosch, South Africa; Cluj-Napoca, Romania; Tarlai Kalan, Pakistan; Ragama, Srilanka; Hue, Vietnam; Valenzuela City, Philippines - to improve understanding of violence against pregnant women and violence against children. The research consortiumincludes an interdisciplinary group of 15 co-investigators, an executive group selected among the consortium members, is jointly responsible for the management of the project. The PI of the project is Prof. Manuel Eisner, Director of the Violence Research Center, University of Cambridge, UK. The research team at the Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy is led by A/Prof. Vo Van Thang and Prof. Michael Dunne, Co-Directors of the Institute for Community Health Research (ICHR).
The EBLS Foundational Study will be started in June 2018, the first six months of the study will serve to prepare everything required to conduct the planned data collections. This will include the completion of the ethics approval procedures, a translated questionnaire ready to be administered on tablets, the full training of site coordinators, and a detailed fieldwork protocol. Each site will also map out current provision to address intimate partner violence and violence against children through a needs and resources assessment. By the end of March 2019, 150 computer-assisted interviews and biosample collections from expectant mothers will have been completed in each of the 8 sites. A first version of the dataset will be available for cleaning, recoding and analysis at this stage. When the pilot is completed, the coordinating team and each local team will have gained the capacity to conduct a birth cohort study and co-operation with policy makers has been fully established in each site.
