The 13th international conference on Public Health among Greater Mekong Sub-Regional countries on "Enhancing transdisciplinary collaborations on Education and Research to tackle priority public health issues in the new Era" has following objectives:

  • To strengthen the relationship of Faculties of Public Health among the Southeast Asian countries and in the world;
  • To share research results in the field of Public Health as well as priority public health issues among greater Mekong Sub-Regional countries;
  • To search for feasible solutions to enhance international collaboration among Public Health Faculties in Mekong Sub-Region and a wider area of the Southeast Asian countries about training and research in Public Health.

An abstract should be in one paragraph with no more 350 words, describing the major aspects of the entire paper in a prescribed sequence that includes: 1) Introduction: The overall purpose of the study and the research problem(s) you investigated; 2) Objective(s): The outcomes that you aim to achieve by conducting research; 3) Method: The basic design of the study; 4) Results: Major findings or trends found as a result of your analysis; and, 5) Conclusions: a brief summary of your interpretations and conclusions.

The Institute for Community Health Research conducted research aimed to assess health status and health related factors among old people in Thua Thien Hue province

 

 

The Institute for Community Health Research, Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy in collaboration with Tokyo Medical and Dental University, Japan has been conducting the study of “The assessment on health status and healthcare needs o felderly people in Thua Thien Hue province”. The research targeted to: 1/ describe the functional status, health services utilization and financial management of people aged 60 and over in Thua Thien Hue province; 2/ determine the needs for healthcare services of people aged 60 and over in Thua Thien Hue province; 3/ evaluate the current curriculum and training program for health workers in healthcare system for the elderly in Thua Thien Hue province.

 

The research was planned to deploy from April 2018 to December 2018 including the elderly people from the community in Hue city; Phu Vang district; and old people who are currently receiving treatment at Department of General Internal Medicine of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy; Department of General Internal Medicine – Gerontology of Hue Central Hospital; and Phu Vang Health center in Thua Thien Hue Province.

The study had been received the approval of the Ethics Committee in Biomedical Research of Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy with high sympathy from local government and health sector. Participants were interviewed only when they agreed to participate in the study and all information was secured through the process of data collection, management and analysis.

 

Thereby, participants were elderly selected randomly from the study sites. The data collection instruments were questionnaires and group discussion questions translated and adapted from the instruments of the collaborative project between the Tokyo Medical and Dental University, University of the Philippines Manila, Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy – “Human Resources Development for Elderly Health Care in Southeast Asia”. The content of the study included: demographic and socio-economy characteristics, basic information of the study subjects and aimed to assess the ability to perform normal daily activities, level of physical activity, social awareness, mental well-being and satisfaction of life, quality of life/sleep, sexuality; to examine the factors of physical and mental abuse such as mistreatment, abandonment,… ; to learn about eating habits, risk factors such as smoking and alcohol. The study also collects data on chronic diseases and injuries, health services coverage and the access to available local health services. In addiction, for the participants who was receiving treatment at the hospital, the study alsoassessed the current status of pain, emotional indexes, treatment process during hospitalization, the use of health care services in the hospital and the local services as well as healthcare needs for the elderly.

 

The next stage of the study will be conducted in November-December 2018, aims to find information about healthcare programs for old people through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with the participants who are health workers or social workers at health centers.
