Pilot Study on Food Safety in South-East Asia: A One Health Approach

One Health is an international movement to promote a holistic multidisciplinary approach at the animal–human–ecosystem interfaces. One health is a recognition of the need to promote a culture of working together sustainably, particularly in resource-constrained countries, to address health risks at the human–animal interface.

Vegetables and aquaculture fishes may be areas of interest for animal health since they have a major impact on the quality (Food safety) and quantity (Food security) of livestock products and public health. Hence, Sydney Southeast Asia Centre, The University of Sydney conducted the pilot study from Dec 2022 to Feb 2023 with its partnership with Hue University, including the ICHR (HueUMP). The pilot project aimed to identify customer preferences and willingness to pay for improving food safety in Hue City.

Vegetables and aquaculture fishes in this pilot study

In this project, The ICHR tasks include:

+ Discussed with the partner about the sampling strategies, and provided inputs to finalize the research instruments.

+ Recruited and provided training to enumerators using tablets/smartphones.

+ Conducting the quantitative face-to-face interviews with randomly selected 400 representative of households/housewives across 5 districts in Hue city.

+ Performing data cleaning and quality control.

The ICHR provided detailed training to enumerators (preventive and public health students) on the tablets and smartphones.

We expected that the results of this study will be disseminated in several ways including media releases, materials on Sydney Vietnam Centre website, presentations at academic conferences, and publications of articles in academic journals.
