The 13th international conference on Public Health among Greater Mekong Sub-Regional countries on "Enhancing transdisciplinary collaborations on Education and Research to tackle priority public health issues in the new Era" has following objectives:

Evidence from research with children, youth, adults of working age and elderly peopleDuring the two days of the 9th and 10th of January, the Institute for Community Health Research (ICHR), Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy (Hue UMP) has organized the workshop on ‘Mental Health in Vietnamese communities: Evidence from research with children, youth, adults of working age and elderly people’ at the Faculty of Public Health, Hue UMP.

Coming to the workshop, there were around 150 active participants including representatives of the Ministry of health, Ministry of Education, Health services and Educational services of central and highland provinces, international professors from Queensland University of Technology and Tasmania University, Australia; University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; doctors of Thua thien Hue psychiatrist hospital, doctors and nurses of oncology department of Hue Central hospital and Hospital of Hue UMP, high school pupils, medical students, cancer patients, postnatal women, representatives of the elderly association, women’s union, the youth union of Thua thien Hue province, professors and doctors, lecturers of Hue UMP, Ha Noi Medical University, Ha Noi School of Public Health… In this workshop, researchers from the ICRH at Hue UMP and colleagues from health and education organizations and sectors have presented the main findings from studies on the mental health of the communities among different age groups carried out in national and central Vietnam. The topics of research are very common issues, influencing many people at different age groups such as: academic pressure and its The remarkable difference of this workshop compared to others was the connection between scientific evidence from research findings and the inclusion of community voices. The workshop has created an open discussion platform, in which community members including pupils, students, new mothers, cancer patients and the elderly have the chance to talk about themselves. They shared very openly with the workshop many issues about mental health related to their own experiences. Issues discussed by community members included: experiences of academic stress during high school, the counseling and practical supports students need from universities, strategies student use to cope with study and prevent depression, things that affect new mothers’ well-being with their babies and what should health services do to support new mothers, how cancer patients experience their treatment and ongoing care, and services the elderly need to help them at home and in the community. The ending session of the workshop includes a workshop overview and panel discussion on how to use research to improve mental health, improving psychosocial support in cancer care with the active participants of community members, researchers, clinical doctors, and policy makers. We hope that the research findings can be applied to make a positive, practical difference in people’s lives. Our research and this workshop are supported financially by The Atlantic Philanthropies Vietnam; The Viet Nam Government postgraduate scholarship program, the Australian Government Australia Awards Scholarships and Endeavour Awards programs; Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy; and the Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation at Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Brisbane, Australia.
